Feminist theatre began in the early 1970’s. These theatres displayed the inequality and mistreatment of women in the world. The growth of feminist theatres allowed a political movement to form as well. Organizations such as NOW, Open Theatre, and Living Theatre helped developed strategies for influencing both political and social systems by showing the oppression of patriarchal domination. These theatres displayed women’s issues by writing plays from a female perspective, discussing the relationship between mother and daughter, and elaborated on the problems that women faced but rarely publicized. After examining the history and definition of feminist theatre, I believe that Trifles is a feminist play. On the surface, the play is about the investigation into Mr. Wright’s murder. However, after further examination, the play is truly about the oppression that Mrs. Wright suffered from her husband and her marriage. After Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peter’s decided to conceal the evidence of the dead bird, it revealed to the readers that those women understood the pain and suffering that Mrs. Wright endured because many women in that society experienced or could relate to some of the mistreatment that Mrs. Wright went through.
